BFA Painting and Drawing from California State University Long Beach

Drawing upon long held interests in physics and the supernatural, Vititow’s artwork investigates

the inherent and unending mysteries embedded in the nature of consciousness. Building up

lush layers of thick paint in her ongoing Plaid series, she translates the lushness of human life

literally, caking materials onto her substrate until the painting appears as a living, growing being

in and unto itself. At times Vititow seems to be pushing the very boundaries of what a canvas

can hold, such as with Valentine’s Day (2017), in which chunky streams of red, yellow and black

intertwine across the painting’s surface, so thick as to almost fall off. At others, Vititow

displays a more restrained hand, as in her A.I. series (2019 -), in which she layers thin coats of

paint to form traditional plaid patterns, letting the light which shines through and off the

painting’s surface take center stage.

Throughout her practice Vititow uses cultural references to draw the viewer closer to the

meanings embedded in her work. The use of chains in her 2019 solo exhibition Pure

Imagination at Anandamide Long Beach, for instance, highlights her interest in the inter-

connectedness of all things. Her use of multi-colored “rainbow” flames in her recent Flame

series, also present in the exhibition, references the Tibetan rainbow philosophy of

dematerialization into light. Dancing across the canvas these flames both mimic the chains

repetitive nature in terms of its shape — link upon link, flame upon flame — and its sense of

continuity, with each flame representing a separate entity that comes from the same source.

Another reference comes in the form of painted replicas of puffy paint stickers, which give off a

child-like, nostalgic feeling, reminiscent of a time in life when imagination and fantasy are given

requisite space to breathe. Vititow sprinkles these sticker replicas across her practice — they

can as easily appear in a plaid painting as they can a figurative pencil drawing — sometimes

combining two or more stickers to create open narratives within the work. Says Vititow, “all

these symbols add up to create the viewers holographic experience where each of those little

realities of each sticker's identity can morph into a new reality where they all combine and tell a

story not just laterally but in all directions.” In these open narratives Vititow achieves what is

essentially the crux of her practice, creating not a painting, but a place in which she uses

painting to give her viewer an opportunity to experience a sense of possibility that needs no

specific resolve, just an openness to the ever-expanding chain of reality.
